I feel like I'm in between on that one, with computer science. Not as connected to real world as electrical engineering and the possibility that a stray spark might fry your one and only prototype chip (in computer science, we have as many backups as we care to create), but not exactly without application either.

I suspect those pure math people are in some ways drivers of innovation, because of the other people who come along and see their fun stuff that hasn't been used yet, and try to figure out how to use it. Which means the pure math people have to go find new stuff to be pure about...
