Since the original Star Wars isn't something that deeply impacted me at any point (I mean, I've seen it, but that's about it) the repetition wasn't a thing that specifically bothered me. (Though I agree that I did sort of like the two characters Han and Leia going back to their comfort zone...especially since Leia's comfort zone was General :) I think it was intent since it was stated in the dialogue.)

But I think yeah, it didn't quite gel for me as a story, I was expecting just a little bit more somehow (probably along the explanation axis), so good to know it's not just me.

Actually, knowing that there was another giant weapon and so on probably did make the movie better and not worse, since I just took it for granted instead of thinking what, another one? or trying to remember how that worked in the first movie or wondering why they could destroy it pretty much the same way.
